Comet Hale Bopp Rings

A close-up photograph of the inner coma of Comet Hale-Bopp photographed with the 50 cm reflector at the TBGS Observatory on 7th April 1997. The picture clearly shows the concentric dust shells shed by the rotating nucleus of the comet as it was heated by the Sun. These dust shells were easily visible in small telescopes and were one of the most remarkable features of the comet.
